Just to clarify, "dire" and "free" can't be used in the same sentence. If you're truly in dire, you wouldn't worry about teh money. Unless, of course, you are double-dire Smile

Avast home edition is darn good. I have seen only 1 compatibility issue out of about 100 installs. Much smaller than the bloatware: Norton, McAfee, (even Panda - which used to be my fav.)

Avast Pro if you want scheduled scans, but the home version is free - all you have to do is register it with a valid email - no spam has come as a result.

If the no scheduled scans is an issue, you can set your screen saver to be the Avast scan-saver. The price is right Smile

Never heard of Avast, but McAfee and Norton ARE bloatware. Jesus christ, I hate them both.

Personally I like Panda active scan. Jesus, anything you don't have to DL is nice. Panda scan has gotten worse though. You have to fill out more shit to do the online scan, it's frustrating.
